With ever increasing regulations and reporting standards, the number of company filings have gone up drastically in the last one decade. Furthermore, we have also observed that apart from the number of filings, the amount of information contained within each of these filings have also gone up. Some of this can be attributed to the changing regulatory landscape but also to the competition within firms to make themselves more attractive to the investors.

For example, the annual report of Hindalco Industries had just 160 pages in the year 2010 versus 392 pages in the most recent one (year 2019).

Similarly, Infosys’ annual report in the year 2010 had 96 pages versus 308 pages in the most recent one.

Can technology help the analyst community to sift through all this information quickly and more accurately?

We’ve introduced a new feature called Saved Search that can help you do just that. One of the applications of this new feature is to empower the analyst to define his/her Custom Themes.

For example, we created a theme around ENVIRONMENT by defining close to 200 phrases that are synonymous with environment. Few of them are GHG, carbon emission, VOC emission, ISO 14040 (and others), effluent, recycling etc.

Using the new Saved Search feature, you can setup alerts in Romulus that will automatically perform a deep-dive search in any document (annual report, in our case) for the companies that you follow, as soon as they are uploaded on the exchange. You will receive an email in your inbox that will highlight all those important environment related snippets so that you don’t have to go through hundreds of pages in the document yourself.

Here’s the result for Hindalco Industries’ latest annual report:

This is just one of the applications of Saved Search. This new feature is most suited for scenarios where in the frequency of search is high (search being performed daily as opposed to quarterly) AND/OR the number of concurrent searches is high (search being performed on 20 phrases versus just 2 phrases).

Earlier today a Tweet mentioning an alleged cyberattack on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) went viral. After several hours, an information officer for the KNPP came out to deny that such an incident had taken place.

Romulus can be a powerful tool to understand which publicly listed companies might be connected to the KNPP and how.

We started with Romulus Document Search looking for mentions of Kudankulam (before broadening our search to Atomic Energy in general)

Across sectors we see, understandably, the highest presence in the Infra, Cap Goods and Power sectors.

Amongst Individual stocks we found several interesting snippets:

Ratnamani Metals talks of its position as a premier supplier of Tubes and Pipes to the Atomic Energy sector

Additionally Ratnamani’s AR suggests that Kudankulam 3 & 4 are the largest Power projects of the lot with construction expected to extend beyond 2022 with additional plays for 5 & 6.

RInfra talks about the KNPP being a marquee project won by them last year

L&T mentions winning the Electrical Main Plant package for KNPP’s expansion

The long drawn out Brexit saga seems to be on its last legs with news of a deal struck between the UK and the EU hitting the news wires yesterday.

The final remaining step in the process is an approval from both the UK and European parliaments.

With the finish line now in sight, we used Romulus to help figure which Indian companies stand to benefit from closure on the Brexit front. That Tata Group companies and Motherson Sumi stand to gain, has been well advertised across news stories, but who else stands to gain?

A search for Brexit in long form Documents pulls up close to 1800 documents over the past 4 years across 857 listed companies

Here a few interesting excerpts from recent months:

1. Suprajit Engineering has been consistently highlighting risk to Suprajit Europe from Brexit and its plans for a warehouse in mainland Europe to counter risks.

2. Mastek Limited‘s recent Rating Agency report notes that Ratings have been constraint on account of Brexit uncertainty

3. Welspun India‘s Christy brand stands to gain from a better than expected outcome for the UK with respect to Brexit

4. Amongst unlisted companies, Macrotech Developers Ltd (Lodha Group) might receive much needed reprieve with respect to their UK venture

The Indian government announced another set of economic reforms last night which included easing rules for overseas single-brand stores and permitting FDI through the automatic route in contract manufacturing and all areas of coal mining.

While reading up news articles on Romulus on the impact of FDI relaxation in the retail sector, we came across a news item on Economic Times here. The article talks about three foreign companies in particular – Apple, IKEA and H&M.

All these three companies are of great interest to us – skyrocketing mobile sales in India, opening of Ikea stores starting with Hyderabad and the structural shifts that we’re witnessing in the way clothes are being bought by customers. We decided to do a quick search in Romulus on just three phrases, “iPhone”, “IKEA” and “H&M”. Within seconds, we got extremely useful results that would have a direct impact on anyone’s investment research strategy.

iPhone

We came across a very important snippet buried under millions of documents that talks about how Redington India Limited (market capitalization of Rs. 4,140 crores approx.) is currently one of the two distributors of Apple in India. How do you think the Redington India story will play out given that Apple can directly sell in India now?

Image

IKEA

The next in line is a small-cap company named Pokarna Limited (market capitalization of Rs. 393 crores approx.) in the building materials industry. The CEO of the company, Paras Kumar Jain, talks about how their business with IKEA is progressing. Do you think that Pokarna’s top-line can see an uplift due to the new norms?

Image

H&M

The last one is an apparels company in the small-cap space named SP Apparels Limited (market capitalization of Rs. 473 crores approx.). The group CFO, V. Balaji, talks about the top-line contribution from new clients including H&M!

With its Big Data and Deep Search capabilities, Romulus helps you identify micro-cap and small-cap companies that are impacted by major market-moving events… even those that do not have any analyst coverage on them!

CEOs everywhere across the world fear being Amazoned especially in the fast changing retail landscape. The company recently announced its intent to acquire 49% of Future Coupons, a Future Group entity that holds a minority stake in Future Retail. Furthermore, Amazon will also get a call option, if exercised, to acquire all or a part of the promoter’s holding in Future Coupons.

Instead of keeping an eye on multiple news sources, we used Romulus’ News and Blogs module to catch this market moving information, which in turn listens to all the major news sources for our users. Following are a few that we picked up:

https://www.reuters.com/article/future-retail-ma-amazoncom/amazon-to-acquire-minority-stake-in-an-indian-supermarket-chain-operator-idUSL2N25I1C3?feedType=RSS&feedName=companyNews&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FcompanyNews+%28News+%2F+US+%2F+Company+News%29https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/amazon-future-group-deal-to-intensify-competition-in-india-s-retail-industry-1566536017989.htmlhttps://www.indiainfoline.com/article/news-top-story/future-retail-slips-7-on-news-of-amazon-acquiring-49-in-future-coupons-119082300311_1.html

Irrespective of that the fact whether this transaction was purely strategic or financial (or both) in nature, we wanted to do a deep dive into the debt commitments of the Future Group companies and its promoters. Instead of going through the liabilities section of each Future Group company, we decided to use Romulus’ deep search capabilities to find information on privately held companies instead.

The objective: See what all companies have received personal guarantees from any member belonging to the Biyani Family for their debt.

The solution: We opened Romulus’ Doc Search module and ran a quick search (INCLUDE ANY) on “Personal Guarantee” and “Corporate Guarantee”, for ALL the Ratings documents in the Romulus universe. Additionally, we put a check on “Biyani” to make sure that we get results only for the Biyani Family members.

Here are few of the private companies which were identified by Romulus within seconds……

….. and here are a few excerpts that Romulus caught from millions of documents:

The news media recently reported that the Central Power Ministry intends to roll-out 300 million smart meters over the next 3 years. Read about it here: https://rmls.co/lkD1Jl

ITI, Genus, Schneider, Siemens & KSEC were identified as potential contenders by the media.

Romulus Document Search in conjunction with My Notes can prove to be a powerful combination to carry out a deeper dig.

We started with an exact search for smart meters in Documents going back to 1Jan2018.

While ITI, Genus & Schneider feature prominently amongst the hits we also uncovered a few other interesting companies and clipped to My Notes.

Here is what we found:

  1. Amongst public companies HPL Electric & Power prominently talks about this in their 04Jun19 Conference Call:

If you see the total enquiries in terms of number of meters, they would be  almost crossing a 20 million meters. We are talking about nearly 2 Crore meters which are currently under various stages of evaluation by the state or the central utilities. So, in terms of pipelines there is a very healthy pipeline in terms of value that can be any where between Rs. 2000-2500 Crores. Plus if you see last month the government had talked about putting in Rs. 25 Crores of smart meters in the next three years, and so that is of course a very ambitious figure, but in terms of the market size if you see in terms of the outlook for the next three to five years that is a huge amount of upside when we look at the metering and looking at that we have achieved healthy margins and we are over Rs. 554 Crores of pending orders almost in May, which is still at the beginning of the year. So, in terms of outlook with our specific order book and the enquiries what is there definitely the outlook is very positive.

At HPL we are very well placed because all the new technologies whether they are prepaid meters or they are all the software communication driven meters or the smart meters, so we are very well placed with that, we have the certifications, there are again few important players in the market which are there and with the competition is intense although it is a mature competition, so definitely we do see a lot of opportunity in the metering to go forward.

  1. Private Companies – Romulus was able to identify these private cos:

Secure Meters Limited where a Rating Agency Press Release notes:

Promoted by the Singhal family of Udaipur in 1987, Rajasthan based SML is the pioneer in domestic electronic energy meters market and caters to all segments of the power transmission and distribution sector.

The ratings of SML continue to derive strength from its established operations in domestic energy meters business along with  its increasing presence in select overseas market and technical  strength in  manufacturing of  smart meters.

Romulus Graph tells us that Secure Meters board is composed of Directors and Promoters of well known public companies

NSure Reliable Power Solutions Private Limited

These rating weaknesses are partially offset by the resourceful promoters having experience in civil constructions with established track record for executing projects and presence in the niche smart metering industry. Nsure currently has work orders from Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM), Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESCOM) for supply, installation and maintenance of Prepaid Keypad Technology Meters and LOI from Hubli Electrical Supply Company (HESCOM) for smart meters.

Bentec India Limited

The upgrade in ratings reflect BIL’s shift to fully electronic meters and smart meters from semi automatic meters in FY18, improvement in financial and credit profile in FY18 and 9MFY19, increased focus on manufacturing sales, increase in capacity utilisation and strong order book position as on February 25, 2019. Clientele includes State Electricity Boards such as – WBSEDCL, Tripura State Electricity Board, Assam State Electricity Board, Jharkhand Vidyut Vitaran Board, Maharashtra State Electricity Board, Kerala  State Electricity Board etc.

Chandrayaan-2, India’s second lunar exploration mission has finally taken off after facing some initial hiccups last Monday. We thought this might be a good time to investigate which Indian companies stand to benefit from this space race.

Document Search can prove to be a powerful tool to conduct such analysis. We employed Advanced Search looking for ANY of #ISRO, #IndianSpaceResearchOrganisation, #chandrayaan, #mangalyaan, #PSLV OR #GSLV over the period of 1-Jan-2018 to present in Document Search.

Search results yielded some interesting insights:

The Usual Suspects: We were expecting companies such as Premier Explosives, Astra Microwave, Hindustan Aeronautics etc. which did show up. For example, Romulus detected these search keywords on an Investor Presentation by Premier Explosives:

Stranger Things: But we found some other really interesting companies as well

  1. National Fertilizers Company is working closely with ISRO to manage a di-nitrogen tetroxide plant on a build-own-operate-supply (BOOS) basis

  1. A smallcap engineering, procurement & construction company, Walchandnagar Industries, also has close relationships with ISRO and DRDO for critical technologies (for example, the company has an existing capacity to build 25 missiles per month)
  1. An industry leading packaging company, Uflex, has developed Satellite Thermal Radiation Insulation Film for ISRO.

As India increases the budgetary allocation for ISRO and other high-technology areas, the private sector stands a huge chance to benefit from it.

We’ve learnt from our customers that making notes while reading is an important part of your research process.

Our research shows that a good notetaking experience needs 3 things to come together:

a. Source-Tracking: Ability to seamlessly switch back and forth between notes and source content

b. Collaborativeness: Ability to share and collaborate with your team

c. Searchability: Ability to search extensively through your notes

My Notes tries to bring these features into a single powerful module.

If you haven’t yet been enabled for My Notes or have any questions about this module do not hesitate to ask us.

Here’s Indrajit, from the Romulus product team showing us how he uses My Notes

Objective:
Indrajit wants to look at the latest Dabur earnings call transcript.
The transcript is 21 pages long.

He wants to capture any new or interesting information that’s present in the transcript for later use.

He doesn’t want to spend more than 15 minutes doing this.

1. He pulls up the Earnings Call Transcript in Romulus Wiki

2. He highlights and annotates important sections of the call as he reads the document

3. He navigates to Romulus My Notes – his highlights and comments are right there for him to see

4. He creates a Note with tags and simply drags & drops relevant snippets from his Highlights and Annotations adding further commentary

5. He shares his note with his teammates Bhushan and Shalabh and solicits comments

6. Indrajit’s colleague Bhushan opens the shared note and edits the Note + adds his comments

One of the first things that caught our attention was this:

Regular readers will be quick to notice that this 300 million number emerged recently in news stories about a roll out by the Central Power Ministry – so to start the proceedings for the day we thought it would be useful to reproduce our last month’s missive on the topic below.
